Information for foreign students, researchers and professors about university lodging and staying at Pisa
By special agreements with religious residences, hostels and institutes, the University of Pisa can offer a reasonably priced accommodation to foreign students and scholars. Futhermore the “Welcome Point”, also in collaboration with other University offices, provides information on visas ad stay permits, the possibility of attending to italian language courses, the services offered by the University as well as information about the city of Pisa, about public transport available, and about cultural, recreational and sports events.

College “Toniolo” for university and doctoral students
College Toniolo lies in the historical center of Pisa, at 400 metres from Piazza dei Miracoli ( the famous square of the Dome and the Leaning Tower ) and nearby S.Caterina Square ( the college is next to S.Caterina Church). It's just 20 minutes walking from Pisa Center Railway Station and 5 minutes from San Rossore Railways Station.

Lodgings ( minimum stay one week; prices may vary ):
single room with bathroom: 415,00€ monthly
large single room with sharing bathroom: 374,00€ monthly

Supplied Services ( The college doesn't serve meals ):
Daily cleaning of rooms and toilets – changes of bed linens twice a month;
Price includes all expenses ( electric power, heating, water ) except for telephone bills;
Tv and entertainment halls with daily newspapers and films;
Sporting Gym ( basket, volleyball ) and 3 football fields:
Sheltered parking for bicycles;
Bar at ground floor of the residence, open daily from 7,25 a.m Until 2 p.m and again from 5,25 p.m until 9 p.m ( closed on sundays and holidays );
In case of sickness, direction of the college may bring meals in your rooms;
Internet point and free connection to Pisa University web network provided in the studying rooms;
Bus stop situated in front of the residence.

Residence Tulipan
The Residence Tulipan lies at approximately 300 meters from Piazza dei Miracoli ( the famous square of the Dome and the Leaning Tower ) outside the Town Walls. It's just 20 minutes walking from Pisa Center Railway Station and 5 minutes from San Rossore Railroad Station.

Lodgings ( minimum stay one week; prices may vary ):
Single room flat ( one person/two persons ) with bathroom and kitchenette: from 350€ to 470€ monthly.
Supplied Services ( The college doesn't serve meals ):
Weekly cleaning of flat and changing bed linen and towels;
Flats are furnished with a kitchenette, a fridge and saucepans;
Price includes all expenses ( electric power, heating, water ) except for telephone bills;
Internet access point ( slow access line ) in each flat;
Inside the Residence there is a coin-operating laundry;
Sheltered parking for bicycles;
Just 20 metres outside the residence you may rent bicycles;
Bars and stores few meters outside the residence;
Bus stop just in front of the residence.

E.U./E.E.A. And Swiss citizens
who plan to stay in Italy for less than 3 months, do not need any formality. If they wish to stay for more than 3 months they have to register at Town Hall office of vital statistics.
Not E.U./E.E.A. Citizens
who plan to stay in Italy for more than 3 months, within 8 working days by entry in Italy, must apply for Permit of Stay. For stays shorter than 3 months, the do not have to apply for Permit of Stay.

Italian and foreign university students are granted access at university canteens if they are studying at Pisa.
Fist step: your Coordinator Professor must attest the period you will stay at the Faculty or Department ( for an example of self-certification: www.dsu.pisa.it/ristorazione/moduli/autocert.doc ).
Second step: you need to apply for a university canteen card ( tesserino mensa ) going to Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio ( ARDSU ) - Piazza dei Cavalieri, 6 – bringing your Passport or Identity Card and Professor's Statement with you.
A standard Meal costs 3€.

Open 7 days a week: monday to saturday from 8,30 a.m to 12,00 p.m on sunday from 10,00 a.m to 12,00 p.m
Sala studio Pacinotti: via Buonarroti, 6 ( nearby Phisics Department ): 3 studying rooms, Tv and entertainment hall with daily newspaper, caffè machine and nearby Students' Garden ( furnished with wireless internet access point ).
Insurance Coverage and Medical Services
E.U./E.E.A. Citizens have the right to health and medical assistance assured by the National Health Service ( Servizio Sanitario Nazionale ).
In order to get it, you must enrol directly to the “Azienda Sanitaria Locale” ( Local Health Office ) - offices are situated in Via Zamenhof, 1 – tel. 050-954111
Not E.U./E.E.A. Students, researchers and professors: an insurance for medical care or hospital recovery is necessary in order to obtain a Visa and/or the Permit of Stay.
In case you arrive in Italy without insurance coverage you can make a voluntary inscription to the Local Health Office ( Azienda Sanitaria Locale ) situated in Via Zamenhof, 1.

In order to open a bank account, to get a job, to enter into an agreement, to enrol to italian Health System and get medical assistance, you need to apply for an Italian tax code ( codice fiscale ).
After applying, you will receive a magnetic card with letters and numbers, which identify the italian and foreign citizen in his/her relationship with Civil Services, Banks, Health System.

It's not easy to open a bank account in Italy and it's not cheap as well. You can use travellers' cheques and credit cards, so it is warmly recommended, before leaving your home country, to check if your own Bank has got any branch in Italy or direct link with any Italian Bank at Pisa.
To open an account you will need the following:

Usual banking hours are 9 a.m to 1,30 p.m and 2,30 p.m to 3,30 p.m
University students wishing to work part-time, are allowed to look for a job.
EC, EEA ( European Economic Area ) and swiss citizens: can carry out any working activity they wish. They have the same social security rights as italian and will get the same benefits ( please see also section on “Social Security” below ).
New EU member States citizens: are no longer subjet to a transitory regime in Italy. They have the same rights as other EU and EEA nationals.
NON EEA nationals: staying in Italy with a visa for studying reasons, may look for a part-time job, as employed, up to 20 weekly hours and a limit of 1040 yearly hours.
EC, EEA ( European Economic Area ) and Swiss citizens: According to Italian and EU social security principles and rules, foreign workers in Italy ( students working part-time, researchers and, in same cases, doctoral students with a fellowship ):
are subject to the law of only one country at the time;
are usually insured under the social security laws of the country they work in, except in case they are posted workers abroad ( lavoratori distaccati );
will get the same benefits and rights as local workers, if the enrol themselves in the italian social security system, by paying contributions;
have the right, in many cases, to sum up working periods carried out in different countries paying contributions ( aggregation of periods ), in order to get work and unemployment benefits and state pensions.
NON EEA nationals: Citizens belonging to countries which have signed Bilateral social security Agreements with Italy, will get the same benefits as local workers, as they enrol themselves in the italian social security system and pay the due contributions.
Please note: doctoral students with ad italian university fellowship will have to pay contributions to a special fund of INPS ( National Institute for Social Security ).
